A Note From Farmer Sam: When Seasons Collide
My favorite time of year on the farm is early April; when the farm just begins to awaken with longer days. The anticipation heading into the busy summer season is so intense the whole team can feel it, as each day gets longer and longer and warmer and warmer. With the increase in plantings and watching crops go into hyper speed after a long slow winter, it is always a very exciting time of year.
A close second to the first signs of Spring is always late September. When the Fall and Summer seasons collide. We see the last of the Summer peppers and tomatoes roll in, as well as pallets of cucumbers, summer squash, and gorgeous late Summer flowers. But of course, the very first winter squash, sweet cabbage, beets, carrots, and beautiful fall greens like our kales, collards and my personal favorite rainbow chard. September is a great time of year to be a farmer, and an even better time to be supporting local farms.
September and October is also a great time for hunkering down. When my work shifts from harvesting, packing and making sales calls to our restaurant partners to analyzing sales & feedback from the past year, nose deep in excel sheets for our planting schedule, and making calls to our dozens of seed providers finding the new and best varieties to plant next year. Fall is always a great time for appreciating how far we’ve come, and reflection to make next year even better. It’s a time of year I am so appreciative from all the support from our whole community and the past 10 months has shown how supportive our community is more then ever. Thank you so much for all your support and please be sure to reach out with any feedback or anything you’d like to see us grow as we plan out our 2021 planting schedule.
