For the Love of Labor

“True wealth is not measured in money, status, or power. It is measured in the legacy we leave behind for those we love and those we inspire.”

- Cesar Chavez

This week, as we kick off the week in celebration of labor day, we’re taking a moment to appreciate and value labor on the farm. As you dive into your farm box this week, here’s some food for thought to munch on. In the U.S. there’s been a dramatic decrease of farm laborers from 7.60 Million in 1950 to 2.06 million in 2000. In other words, less than 2% of the U.S. workforce is engaged in farm work.

According to the USDA, the average income of farmworkers was in between the range of $15,000 - $17,499. With that said, How do we value farm labor?

Here at Spade & Plow, we value getting back to our agricultural roots. Farming has been around in our family and of course, in human history for a very long time. By sourcing food locally, you are supporting us in helping us bridging the gap between our farmers and consumers.
