Farmer Spotlight: Jenn Castillo

Jenn Castillo grew up in Salinas, California, a town well-known for its agricultural industry and nicknamed the “Salad Bowl” of the world. As the Dust Bowl of the 1930’s left the land in Oklahoma barren, Jenn’s grandparents migrated to California where their skills as farmers were honored and befitted. Jenn said her grandparents influenced her understanding of farming as a business, the value of education and hard work, and taking care of family first.

“Working at Spade & Plow is like working with family. We take care of each other.”

When asked what her work life was like before she started at the farm, Jenn responded with warmth and excitement. After obtaining her AA in Business Accounting, Jenn worked as an office clerk and a CFO’s assistant. She worked hard to run a business that she just was not passionate about. “This can’t be where the dream ends,” she thought. That is when she made the decision to trade in her high heels for work boots and began working for CMC Farms. Launching herself into a new professional journey in 2018, Jenn worked at multiple Bay Area farmers markets. She learned more about the agricultural industry first hand from other farmers and vendors. Including how farmers markets are a fundamental place of business for local farmers.

Jenn loved working alongside local farmers at the market and wanted to dive deeper into the industry. At Saratoga Farmers Market, Jenn was introduced to Yeun, Spade & Plow’s flower farmer. After learning how Jenn wanted to expand her horizon in the agricultural industry, Yeun connected her with Spade & Plow.

Many customers recognize this lovable face since Jenn started full-time delivering CSA boxes.

“As a mother of two, I needed a job that supports family dynamics and understands what it means to be a working mom. When I found Spade & Plow, I knew it was a perfect fit.”
