It's Ferment To Be: A Partnership With Wise Goat Organics

If you ever happen to walk into the Spade & Plow packing shed on your average weekday afternoon, there’s a chance you may see a pallet stacked high with hundreds of crispy green cabbages. Nestled tightly together to maximize every inch of blue bins, these layered beauties are likely headed to a ‘jarring’ new home: Wise Goat Organics.

“Wise Goat?” You say. “I’ve been seeing their products as a CSA add-on recently!” And perhaps you’ve seen their lively stand at our local farmer’s markets too. Not surprisingly, we’re pretty big fans of Wise Goat and are thrilled to begin offering their wholesome products in our CSA. Wise Goat Organics is committed to sourcing and selling locally, never using plastic, and always paying their employees fair wages. Their fermentation process is centered around using glass, which is the best method for producing probiotic bacteria to help with digestion, supporting the immune system and gut health (YUM!).

Mary and her sweet daughter selling Wise Goat products at the farmer’s market (who do you think sold more?)

Mary is the owner, founder, or as she prefers, ‘Chief Kraut Pounder,’ of Wise Goat. She started the business while working at a nutrition practice when she realized a lot of her patients had digestion issues and couldn’t easily find properly fermented foods. Mary started making tasty krauts for her patients out of her own kitchen. Now, 6 employees and a slew of supermarket customers later, she’s still committed to her original values: “We all leave a footprint and I’m always trying to figure out how to minimize ours as much as possible. I don't need to make a lot of money from Wise Goat, as long as our employees are paid well, we’re keeping our footprint small, and helping our community be more healthy.” Mary is especially sensitive to where our world is headed because of her young daughter. The cutest face of the bizz, Mary’s daughter has influenced the reason for much of the care, detail, slow growth and nutritious value of the company

If you’re wondering how to use your favorite new CSA Wise Goat products, look no further than tips straight from the source, thanks to our Chief Kraut Pounder!

-Vegan Kimchi: Still incredibly delicious and flavorful with no fish sauce, gluten or dairy. It’s got some heat but not as intense as non-vegan kimchi and, of course, it’s a little less fishy. Mary recommends mixing this kimchi in mashed potatoes or any other mashed root like parsnips or rutabaga. We’ve got lots of winter root vegetables at farmers markets and CSA that pair nicely with this Kimchi. Give us a shout and tell us your favorite medley!

-Almond Butter: This special nut butter is made with lion's mane mushrooms in powdered form to help with immune and cognitive support. While there’s mushroom flavor in your butter, you still get all the awesome health benefits of a yummy spread. Sweetened with coconut sugar and amazing with any type of fruit or toast, this is a pantry staple.

-The Classic Kraut: This is awesome used on eggs for a nutritious breakfast and kick start to your day. In the evening, one of the best and easiest dinners is rice with kraut and a protein.
