Turn it up for Hakurei Turnips!
A SIMPLE AND BEAUTIFUL ROOT
THAT’S EASY TO PREPARE, AND SIMPLY MAGIC TO TASTE!
We absolutely love growing these Japanese variety of turnips called Hakurei here at the farm! We are stoked that our Hakurei turnips turned it up this year with some beautiful large leaves this year compared to last year. “Turns out” that covering up the crop when its growing out in the field with a blanket cover (as farmers we refer to this as “remay”) keeps the leafy parts protected from the frost which yields significantly larger leaves.
The greens on a turnip are highly cherished for their delicious peppery flavor and nutritional value. They are loaded with iron, calcium, and zinc!
As for the turnip root, Tyler our CSA manager says these turnips taste like “peppery apples” and his favorite way to eat them is raw! With all the rain we’ve been getting on the farm, our turnips are developing a juicier texture and sweeter flavor. Here’s a Simply Roasted Turnips Recipe that we posted previously! You can also pair it with a quick skillet sauté of the turnip greens. We hope you enjoy!
