Farmer Spotlight: Behind the Greenhouse Door

This has been a year of many firsts, including the building of our very own greenhouse! Thanks to this new addition, we will be able to experiment with more variety, and hopefully find the best fits for our soil and your CSA boxes.

Who’s behind the greenhouse door, you ask? You may recognize Jessica Morley from the San Pedro Square and San Mateo Farmers Markets. She’s been with us since this summer, where she came to us fresh from an internship at the Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary in Rutland, Ohio. Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary is part of United Plant Savers, an organization aimed at preserving and protecting native medicinal plants in the United States and Canada. The work of United Plant Savers involves research, education and conservation of native medicinal plants and their habitats. Their aim is to further ensure that the rich traditions of the North American and Euro-America folk medicine continue to thrive, and to uphold the diversity of medicinal herbs and plants.

Jessica is a Washington native, but calls San Jose home. Her passions for learning, plant propagation, and preserving and experimenting with ancient and heirloom varieties of plants and vegetables make her a great fit for the Spade & Plow greenhouse! We’re lucky to have her as Greenhouse Manager and are grateful for her commitment to the local community.

Be sure to say hi at the markets!
